Certain Vaastu/ Vastu principles if followed while doing the landscaping or planting the trees n plants in our Garden we can achieve a healthy environment around us. Below are some of the Vastu principles:-

Trees & plants: Plants should be planted during auspicious constellations. It is ideal to plant during the bright half, i.e., close to the full moon. Saplings should first be planted in clay pots and only later placed in the ground. This enables them to grow better.

It is always good to grow a Tulsi plant on one’s property. Tulsi should be located on the North, North-East, or East sides of the house, or in front of the house. Trees should not be planted directly in front of the house’s main entrance. There should be an even number of trees on one’s property, not an odd number. Trees should be planted on the South or West sides of the house. Ideally, they should be planted on both sides rather than on only one side. It is not good to plant a tall tree on the North, North-East, or East sides of a building.

Smaller trees may be planted on the East or North sides, but no trees should be planted in the North-East corner. Tall trees should not be too close to a building as they block the sunlight. A tree’s shadow should not fall on the house. Large trees should not be located too near the house as their roots can damage the foundation and compound wall. Also, the roots of large trees absorb sunlight quickly, meaning these positive rays will not be received by the building. Do not allow tree branches to touch the house.

Stone sculptures and rock gardens should be located on the South-West side of the house because they are heavy.

Thorny plants should not be planted near the house. Cactus should not be planted at all. Thorny plants other than roses have negative energy. Ideally, all thorny plants should be pulled up and destroyed.

Creepers or other plants should not be grown by using the building or compound wall as support. Creepers should only be grown in a garden, and they should have their own independent supports.

If a tree must be removed because it is inauspicious or for other reasons, it should be removed in the months of Magh or Bhadrapada. The day before cutting the tree, worship it and express regret that it must be removed from its rooting. Promise to plant a new tree in its place. Do so within three months. When cutting the tree, it should fall East or North, not in the South or West.

Gardening is an activity, which quite a few people practice, where they cultivate ornamental plants, fruits, vegetables, herbs etc. Some prefer small kitchen-gardening as a hobby, while others take it up as a full-time chore; their way of giving back to nature and society.

It can be practiced anywhere and in any capacity. Have you ever noticed that some people love to decorate their front yard with a garden, while others maintain a healthy kitchen garden in the backyard and a few like to maintain hanging baskets of greenery in their homes?

Garden Vastu till date remains one of the most overlooked aspects of Vastu Vidya. People often look out for Vastu tips for their bedroom, kitchen, living room, bathroom, terrace, puja room, etc., but you will seldom find decorating their garden area as per Vastu.

Vastu Shastra explains that surrounding a home, your bedroom, or office with garden, trees, or plants increases the flow of positive energy, thus boosting success, financial position, and relationships among the inhabitants.

The following are certain rules and regulations based on the direction while maintaining a garden or decorating your room with plants.

North

According to Vastu Shastra, a garden in the North direction is highly auspicious with the Tulsi plant in the center. All the plants inside the house limits must not have thorns, except in the case of Rose (thorns represent hurdles in bliss). A water fountain near the garden is advised. Only small plants or shrubs must be planted in the North direction. This corner should not have huge trees and rocks also painting with rocks must be avoided.

East

If there’s no space in the North direction, then this direction can also be considered for kitchen gardening. It is advised that only fruit-bearing plants are plotted in this direction. Plants that represent a family’s prosperity and wealth must be avoided in this direction like Tulsi and Money plant.

West

Those who do not have a gardening area in the above-mentioned directions shouldn’t be disheartened. If there’s ample space in the West direction of the house then utilize this space for planting big trees like mango, orange, banana, etc. But, these trees must be at a distance from the home. This direction must be decorated with big rocks, ornamental statues or scriptures, etc. Avoid swings for children or if possible do not let the pet use this area for answering nature’s call.

South

This direction is advised against for gardening or kitchen gardening as per Vastu Shastra, as there must not be a flowing water source in this area. This space should be left open or decorate the area with hanging baskets with plants, like money plants; as you need to water them once in a day or two and it won’t require the flow of water.
