Hormonal Imbalance Treatment in Ayurveda

The fast-paced lifestyle, irregular and improper food habits, and stressful environment of today’s world are responsible for the rising cases of hormonal imbalances. The imbalance of hormones may lead to a variety of problems such as thyroid problems, the irregular behavior of sex hormones, etc. Contrary to other medical treatments, Ayurveda provides an effective treatment for hormonal imbalances.

Hormones

Hormones act as connectors or messenger molecules that carry information from mind to body and vice versa, in order to maintain the functionality of both mind and body. The hormonal bridge acts as a conduit of the information flow, which is necessary for the healthy functioning of the biological and psychological aspects of the human body.

The hormones are responsible for the following functions of the human body

  • Maintaining the temperature of the body
  • Development and growth of tissues and cells
  • Production of energy and its storage and utilization
  • Reproduction

The hormonal imbalance

As mentioned earlier, hormonal balance is important for the healthy functioning of the human mind and body. This balance can be disturbed due to a number of reasons like Perimenopause or during puberty. The hormonal imbalance can be caused by an irregular diet or lifestyle, body weight, stress levels, and the presence of excess toxins in the body.

The hormonal imbalance can be of two types

  • Hyper conditions – This can be defined as an overproduction of hormone, resulting in excess hormones being present in the body, causing an imbalance
  • Hypo conditions – This can be defined as underproduction of hormones, resulting in poor quality or shortage of hormones that are needed by the body, thereby causing an imbalance.

Hyper conditions

Hyperactivity is a state of being unusually or abnormally active. It’s often difficult to manage for people around the person who’s hyperactive, such as teachers, employers, and parents.

If you have hyperactivity, you may become anxious or depressed because of your condition and how people respond to it.

Common characteristics of hyperactivity include:

  • constant movement
  • aggressive behavior
  • impulsive behavior
  • being easily distracted

If you’re struggling to stay still or concentrate, you may develop other problems as a result. For example, it may:

  • lead to difficulties at school or work
  • strain relationships with friends and family
  • lead to accidents and injuries
  • increase the risk of alcohol and drug abuse

Hypo conditions

Hypoglycemia is a condition in which your blood sugar (glucose) level is lower than normal. Glucose is your body’s main energy source.

Hypoglycemia is often related to diabetes treatment. But other drugs and a variety of conditions — many rare — can cause low blood sugar in people who don’t have diabetes

Hypoglycemia needs immediate treatment when blood sugar levels are low. For many people, a fasting blood sugar of 70 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL), or 3.9 millimoles per liter (mmol/L), or below should serve as an alert for hypoglycemia. But your numbers might be different. Ask your doctor.

Treatment involves quickly getting your blood sugar back to normal either with high-sugar foods or drinks or with medications. Long-term treatment requires identifying and treating the cause of hypoglycemia.

Hormonal imbalance and Ayurveda

Ayurveda is an ancient, holistic science of healing. It believes that every human body has a unique balance of Tridoshas that are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. This unique balance or constitution is known as Prakriti, and it’s influenced by the dominant Dosha of the individual constitution. In Ayurveda, Hormones are known as Dhatu Agni and are considered as a part of Pitta Dosha, since they are carried by blood or Rakta Pitta.

Ayurveda focuses on correcting the Dosha imbalance, which is considered to be the root cause of every ailment, including the hormonal imbalance. The Ayurvedic treatment for hormonal imbalance consists of the following components

  • Inclusion of Yoga, meditation, and Pranayama as tool of relaxation and stress relief
  • Inclusion of daily exercises
  • Inclusion of fresh fruits like Papaya, pineapple and pomegranate, vegetables and food that supply sufficient nourishment and energy to the body
  • Intake of a glass of almond milk
  • Avoiding margarine, vegetable and peanut oils and using olive or coconut oils
  • Inclusion of herbs to promote hormonal balance such as Neem, Ashwagandha, Vidarikand, Shatavari,

Ayurveda believes in targeting the root cause of an ailment, thereby eliminating the disease, and preventing it from future occurrences. The treatment depends on the Prakriti of an individual, so it is effective in curing the problems. The Ayurvedic treatment is natural and promotes general good health and a sense of well being.
