According to Vastu Shastra, the main door of a home is not only the entry point for the family but also for energy. “The main door is a transition zone, through which we enter the house, from the outer world. It is a place from where happiness and good luck enters the home,” says Mumbai-based Vastu consultant, Nitin Parmar. “Consequently, the main entrance has been accorded prime importance, as it lets in or keeps out the cosmic energy flow that promotes health, wealth, and harmony. Moreover, the main door also creates the first impression of a house,” he points out.

Direction of the main door

“The main door should always be in the north, north-east, east, or west, as these directions are considered auspicious. Avoid having the main door in the south, south-west, north-west (north side), or south-east (east side) directions. A door in the south or south-west can be corrected by using a lead metal pyramid and lead helix. A door in the north-west can be corrected, with a brass pyramid and a brass helix, while a door in the south-east direction can be corrected, by using a copper helix,” suggests Parmar.

Materials used for the main door

1. A wooden door is considered most auspicious for the main entrance.
2. South direction: the door should have a combination of wood and metal.
3. West: should have metalwork.
4. Northern door: should have more of a silver color.
5. East: should be made of wood and adorned with limited metal accessories.

Decorating the area around the main door

A clean house, especially the main entrance, attracts positive energy. Do not keep dustbins, broken chairs, or stools, near the main door, cautions Kajaal Rohira, a holistic healer from Mumbai.

Tanya Sinha, a homemaker from Delhi, rejected almost a dozen flats, as the main entrance of the house was not according to Vastu Shastra, before buying a home with an entrance in the east. “The main door of my house has been artistically designed, with a matte gold finish. It has a carved swastika design and a gold-colored nameplate on it. The main entrance exudes a warm welcome and I have also placed a lovely yellow lamp at the entrance,” she explains.

Vastu dos and don’ts for the main door

1. Always have a bright light at the entrance but avoid red lights. The main door should be well-lit in the evening.
2. Never place a mirror opposite the main door.
3. Decorate the entrance with green plants, if there is space.
4. The main door should open at 90 degrees, without any obstacles in the way.
5. Ensure that the hinges are oiled regularly and door accessories are polished. There should not be any broken or chipped wood or missing screws at the entrance. Extra nails must be removed.
6. Always put up a nameplate. A metal nameplate is recommended if the door is in the north or west direction. Use a wooden nameplate, if the door is in the south or east direction.

The entrance door should also be taken in consideration while the application of Vastu to your house. Entrance door should be in North, East or North East of the house. The entrance door size should always be larger than the other doors of the house.

Number of Entrances

Many houses may have more than one entrance on the frontage. Some rules however, have to be followed for providing these doors. If there is only one main entrance door to the house then more wealth is expected over other factors. If there are two doors in the entrance then a comfortable life for the inmates can be expected. If there ar three doors than it is harmful to the residents. If more than three doors are provided as main entrance than it causes many problems.

Placement of Main Entrance Doors

One Door If only one entrance s provided to the house it should be placed in east or north for the best results. Doors in the west and south are not good/allowed, but these directions can be used for a entrance in commercial establishments.

Two Doors

If a house has two doors than they can be in the following combinations:

1. East in combination with north and west.
2. West with North and East is allowed.
3. South and West Doors are not allowed

5. South and East Doors are not allowed.

Three Doors

1. Three doors excluding the east are inauspicious
2. Three doors excluding south are auspicious.
3. Three Doors excluding north is inauspicious.
4. Three doors excluding west are auspicious.

Four Doors

If the house is aligned to the magnetic orientation than keeping the door in all the 4 directions is very auspicious.

Inner Doors

Height of the doors should be at least 7′-0, and with of the door should be at least 3′-6.

Number of Doors

The number of doors within the house should be even in the count, but not ten or multiples of eight. There are several rules to be noted before counting all ten doors within the house. the main gate or the doors in the outhouse are not counted with doors in the house. It is to be noted than two flanged doors are counted as one door. The entrance may without doors but if they are covered overhead to form an enclosed passage then they are counted as doors. Doors to partitions within the house which do not touch the ceiling are not counted as doors.
